NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – For the second consecutive week University of Dayton freshman Celeste Edwards has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week.
Edwards, who is the reigning A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week, followed up her award-winning performance with another career week.
She scored a team- and career-high 18 points in Dayton’s 73-69 win over VCU on Wednesday, Feb. 5. She hit the game-winning three-pointer with 23 seconds left to play in the second half. Edwards also had a career-high five steals, including a game-deciding steal with 10 seconds left in regulation that allowed UD to hold onto a 72-69 lead. She was fouled and hit one free throw for the final score, 73-69. In addition, she had a team-high five assists.
She followed that with a 17-point, six-rebound and game-high six assist performance to help UD to an 87-77 road win over Duquesne, which gave UD sole possession of first place in the A-10 standings.
Edwards led UD in assists on the week (11) and was second in scoring (17.5 ppg). She also led the Flyers in steals on the week.
Dayton plays at Rhode Island on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. before returning to UD Arena to take on Richmond on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as it is Dayton’s Breast Cancer Awareness/Play4Kay Game and the Flyers will recognize breast cancer survivors and their families.
