The Canisius College men’s basketball team will host a pair of exhibition games in the Koessler Athletic Center as the team prepares for the 2013-14 regular season, head coach Jim Baron announced today. The Golden Griffins are scheduled to play Daemen College on Monday, Oct. 28 and Mercyhurst on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Both games will be played in the Koessler Athletic Center and game time for both contests is set for 7 p.m.
Daemen posted a 27-6 overall record in 2012-13, with those 27 victories setting a new school record. The Wildcats averaged 90 points per game last year and are led by senior Casey Sheehan, who averaged 16 points per game. Daemen is currently transitioning to the NCAA Division II level. The team will compete in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association again this year. This will mark the first time Canisius and Daemen have met in men’s basketball.
Mercyhurst posted a 16-13 overall record and a 12-10 mark in PSAC play last year. The Lakers have recorded eight-straight winning seasons and have qualified for the PSAC championship tournament in each of the previous four years. Mercyhurst averaged 63.4 points per game last year while holding opponents to 60.2 points per contest. The Griffs and Lakers have played a total of three previous contests, with the last meeting coming Dec. 1, 1984. Canisius is 3-0 all-time in men’s basketball against Mercyhurst.
Canisius will officially open the 110th season in program history Monday, Nov. 11, when the Blue and Gold plays host to South Dakota in the Koessler Athletic Center. Game time for that contest is set for 7 p.m. Season tickets for the 26-game men’s and women’s home slate are now on sale through the Canisius Ticket Office by calling 716-888-2885 between from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.
