Pending medical record reviews, former Cy Young award winner Jake Peavy is going to Boston
By Dave Holcomb
No one ever really questioned whether the Chicago White Sox would trade their best pitcher Jake Peavy before the trade deadline, but fans could not predict where he would land. That question has been answered as the Boston Red Sox acquired the former Cy Young Award winner late Tuesday night according to CBS Sports.
Peavy will be sent to Boston as part of a three-team trade. The Detroit Tigers are the third team involved who will receive infielder Jose Iglesias from the Red Sox. Chicago adds outfielder Avisail Garcia from Detroit, pitcher prospects Francelis Montas and J.B. Wendelken and infielder Cleuluis Rondon from Boston.
Detroit also threw in reliever Brayan Villarreal, currently pitching in the minors according to ESPN, for Boston.
All that is left is a review of Peavy’s medical records, and the deal will be finalized.
Boston was looking to make a deal for a starting pitcher due to injuries that have occurred in their rotation. Clay Buchholz is a perfect 9-0 this season, but has not started since June 8th because of a shoulder problem.
With this trade, the Red Sox receive the best pitcher available on the market. The three-time all-star is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA in 13 starts this season with the White Sox. Peavy won the Cy Young Award in 2007 with the San Diego Padres.
The trade also boosts the Tigers lineup with the addition of Iglesias. Detroit’s everyday shortstop, Jhonny Peralta, is linked to the Biogenesis scandal and could receive a suspension in the next week or so. Iglesias gives the Tigers a second option up the middle.
At only 23, Iglesias is hitting .330 in 215 at-bats this season, and he is traditionally known as a defensive shortstop. He can also play third base, which is where Boston mostly used him this season.
