GENEVA, NY — A strong performance on the mound by Geneva starter Nick Myers (St. Michael’s College) keyed a Red Wing victory over the visiting Hornell Dodgers in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park.
In his third start of the season Myers put together eight complete innings of work, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out seven.
The Red Wing bats found success against Dodger starter Jimmy Gutowski (Monroe CC). Gutowski who came into the game with a .90 ERA, allowed five runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings.
After loading the bases in the first inning but failing to score a run, the Wings were able to get on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Geneva put up two runs in the home half of the second against Gutowski. Aaron Tovsky (Davidson College) led off the inning with a single to right advancing to second on a throwing error. After the next two Red Wing batters were retired, Zak Worsley (North Park University) delivered a clutch two-out base hit scoring Tovsky. Worsley advanced on the throw home was then singled home on another two-out base hit by John Dockins (Kutztown University) to give Geneva a 2-0 advantage after two.
The Dodgers put up their first run of the game in the fourth inning off Myers. After an out to start the inning Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) tripled to deep center field. The next batter Anthony Renz (Mansfield University) delivered a successful sacrifice fly to right field bringing in McCracken cutting score to 2-1.
Geneva broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs of their own. Brandon Costa (Concord University) singled to start the inning. The next batter Dustin Stuck (Alvernia University) was hit by a pitch to make it first and second. Leadoff hitter Worsley then came to the plate and delivered a single of his own to load the bases. A Dockins single to left brought home the third run of the game with Costa crossing the dish. Lee Miller (Davidson College) then singled to drive in the fourth run for the Wings. Brian Weightman’s (St. Bonaventure) sacrifice made it 5-1 Wings as Dockins came home to score.
The Dodgers were able to bring the score back to 5-2 in the top of the fifth thanks to a home run over the right field fence by Aaron Haag (Southeaster Louisiana). This time however the Red Wings failed to answer in the home half of the inning.
After a scoreless sixth, seventh, and eight, the Dodgers were able to put a scare into the Red Wings in the top of the ninth putting men on first and second with one out. However pitcher Robert Winemiller (Case Western Reserve) was able to settle down getting a fielder’s choice and a fly out to center fielder Worsley to seal the victory for the Red Wings. Win the win the Red Wings improve to 8-7 on the season as the Dodgers will fall to 8-9.
