GENEVA, NY – The second time was the charm for Oneonta Outlaws. After falling to Geneva Red Wings the day before the Outlaws were able to bounce back and take a 5-1 victory in New York Collegiate Baseball Leage action at McDonough Park.
The Outlaws were led on the mound by starting pitcher Malcolm Purdy (Grand Canyon University) who delivered seven strong innings allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out five. Oneonta was led at the plate by shortstop Derek Hirsch (Wofford College) who was 3-4 at the dish while scoring two runs. The Red Wing bullpen was unable to keep the game close spoiling a strong effort on the mound by Wing starter Thomas Bergjans (Haverford College) who allowed just one run over six innings while striking out seven Oneonta batters.
The Outlaws got on the board first in the top of the third inning. After a strikeout by Bergjans, Hirsch hit a double to the right field gap. This was followed by another strikeout by Begjans, but he couldn’t close out the inning allowing a walk and then a two-out base hit by Brian Kraft (Grand Canyon University) scoring Hirsch from second base to give the Outlaws a 1-0 lead. The inning could have been much worse for the Wings if it wasn’t for center fielder Zak Worsley (North Park University) throwing out Oneonta base runner Jake Levine (Brown University) at home to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth Geneva was able to strike and tie the game at 1-1. The run came thanks to a leadoff triple by center fielder Worsley who later scored in the inning on a ground out by second baseman Kenneth Rabin (Pomona-Pitzer College).

Christopher Pindar (SUNY Oneonta) doubled to the gap and advanced on a throwing error. After a bloop single by Jake Levine, Pindar scored on a wild pitch to give Oneonta a 3-1 lead. Oneonta loaded the bases and pushed across their fourth run of the game across on a sacrifice fly by Heath Holder (University of Georgia). The Outlaws tacked on their final run of the game in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Spencer Duffie (Mercer University) scoring Brian Kraft to cap off Oneonta’s four run inning.
The Red Wings failed to mount any sort of comeback in their final two at bats against Oneonta reliever Corey Kafka (Mercer University) who held the Red Wing bats hitless in the final two innings. With the win the Oneonta Outlaws improve to 5-3 on the season as Geneva falls to 2-3.
