(Sherrill, NY) – An eighth-inning rally proved to be the difference as the Sherrill Silversmiths beat the Geneva Red Wings by a score of 2-1 in a New York Collegiate Baseball League contest on Wednesday night.
The Silversmiths plated both of their runs in the frame with two outs. Pinch hitter Ka’ai Tom (Fort Scott Community College) started the inning with a walk and proceeded to steal second. After two consecutive ground outs to the pitcher, shortstop Mike Escanilla came through with an RBI single.
Escanilla swiped a bag of his own before Matt Ederle (University of Rhode Island) doubled down the left-field line for what proved to be the deciding hit.
“It was a 3-1 count and I was just looking for a fastball,” Ederle said. “It was nice to finally pull the ball and actually get good wood on it.”
The Red Wings only run came in the first inning. With runners on second and third, Sherrill starting pitcher Payton Logan (Fort Scott Community College) balked, allowing the run to come in. Logan settled down and pitched a gem, allowing two hits and four walks while striking out eight over seven strong innings.
“I stayed around the zone but had too many free passes. I have to cut those down,” the southpaw pitcher said. “Overall a good team win and it felt good to pick up the W.”
Red Wings starting pitcher Kevin Lee (Ramapo College) had a good day on the hill himself. Lee allowed three hits and struck out five over six innings to pick up the no-decision. Jason Meger (North Park University) entered in the seventh and gave up the two runs in the eighth inning to pick up the loss.
Ed Zakrzewski (MVCC) relieved Logan in the top of the eighth for the Silversmiths. Zakrzewski struck out two while not allowing a hit over the final two frames to pick up the win.
“It was all pitching. On the mound we threw strikes and got ahead in counts,” Sherrill manager Dennis Duffy said. When you do those things, you’re going to win a lot of games.”
Sherrill improved to 2-4 on the season while Geneva dropped to 1-1. The Silversmiths host the Syracuse Junior Chiefs tomorrow night (Thursday) at Noyes Park at 5:00 pm.
