Niagara draws Maryland in NIT first round

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles will face the Maryland Terrapins in the 2013 National Invitational Tournament (NIT) First Round on Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m. on ESPN2 announced on the NIT Selection Show on ESPNU on Sunday night.


“The NIT has a story tradition and we are so proud to be a part,”  head coach Joe Mihalich said.”To play a team like Maryland is a great challenge.”


The Purple Eagles (19-13) earned the automatic bid into the NIT after winning the MAAC regular-season title with a 13-5 conference record. Niagara will be making its 14th appearance in the NIT, which are the second most among current MAAC members, and third under head coach Joe Mihalich who is 1-2 in the tournament. This will be NU’s first postseason game since playing in the 2009 NIT Tournament First Round when the Purple Eagles hosted Rhode Island for their first-ever postseason game at the Gallagher Center.


NU is 9-13 all-time in the NIT with the last win coming against Troy in 2004.


Niagara will be the No. 7 seed in the matchup. Second-seeded Maryland (22-12, 8-10 ACC) advanced to the 2013 ACC Tournament Semifinals and has made seven appearances in the NIT (11-6).


The only previous meeting between the programs was in the 1972 NIT Championship Game, with Maryland winning 100-69.
