Xavier women’s basketball drops Rhode Island, 59-40

CINCINNATI – The Xavier University women’s basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire in a 59-40 win over Rhode Island, Sunday in Atlantic 10 action on senior day at Cintas Center.

Xavier (9-15, 3-7 A-10) handed Rhody (5-19, 0-9 A-10) its 13th straight loss and seventh consecutive in the series. XU held URI under 50 points, the third time this season and 61st time since the 2002-03 campaign.

Up by 17 at the half, XU led by as many as 23 in the second half, firing at a 49 percent clip from the field (22-of-45) and 5-of-8 from behind the arch while and forcing 16 points off of 17 URI turnovers. The Rams shot 30 percent from the field, going 15-of-50 and netted only a 1-of-10 effort from behind the arc.

Following the win, the Musketeers’ third in the last four games, seniors Amber Gray and Jessica Pachko were honored on the court for their contributions to the program.

Pachko and Gray topped the stat sheet for XU, netting 12 and 11 points, respectively. Gray added a game-high eight rebounds while Pachko snagged five. Briana Glover and Shatyra Hawkes each scored nine while Jenna Crittendon added eight points. Glover added a career high three blocks.

Ty O’Neill dished out six assists, her second-best mark of the season and best in league play.

Rhody’s Tayra Melendez led all scorers with 17 points and had a team high seven rebounds. 

Xavier led 31-14 at the break, tying its biggest lead of the season at halftime after riding a hot shooting streak both from the field (11-of-22/.500) and behind the arc (4-of-6/.670). Leading 7-6 with 13:24 left in the half, the Musketeers outscored Rhode Island 24-8 over the final 12:24 of the stanza.

The 14 points surrendered was the fewest given up by XU in the opening half the season to go along with Musketeer points scored off of 10 URI turnovers.
