CINCINNATI- The Xavier women’s basketball team fell short Wednesday night in Cintas Center, losing 48-41 to the Fordham Rams. Freshman Briana Glover netted a career-high 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field to along with a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Senior Amber Gray brought down eight rebounds as did junior Shatyra Hawkes which ties a career-high.
The Musketeers struggled from the field shooting 25 percent (11-of-44) while Fordham shot a 35% (17-of-49). The Musketeers stayed with Fordham the entire game by shooting 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) from the free throw line to Fordham’s 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) and grabbing 40 boards to Fordham’s 32.
The second half started slow but Glover dominated when she had the ball in her hands. She finished the second half with 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Xavier was shooting 3-of-14 with 6:30 remaining and finished 4-of-22. Gray added six points on a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
The story of the first half was the Xavier defense dominating on the boards with 16 rebounds and holding Fordham to seven field goals and 18 first half points, the second fewest allowed by the Musketeers this season and the lowest since its game against Northern Illinois on December 28 in which they allowed 20 points at halftime.
Xavier’s defense did not allow Fordham to pull down an offensive rebound on any of their first 14 shots, getting its first rebound with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. The Rams were held to a lone free throw over a 7:36 Musketeer run that began at 16:32 and ended at 8:16 left in the first half.
Glover was the catalyst on offense early for the Musketeers as she was 3-of-4 shooting for eight points including two 3-pointers, ending the half shooting 4-of-7 with 10 points. Gray also contributed with an early four points and two rebounds and ended the half with six points and four boards.
Erin Rooney led the Rams with 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the field. Abigail Corning led the way for Fordham on the boards with 11 rebounds.
The Musketeers next hit the court Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm when they travel to Virginia to face the Richmond Spiders. They return home Thursday January 31 to square off against the Saint Louis Billikens at 7:00 pm.
Fordham’s 48-41 victory snapped a 17-game winning streak held by the Musketeers dating back to the 1997-98 season. This is the Rams first victory over the Musketeers since January 25, 1997.
Xavier is now 178-86 in Atlantic 10 regular season play.
Xavier went on a 14-0 run over 7:36 of the first half beginning at 16:32 and was snapped by a Fordham free throw.
Fordham’s 18 first half points is the second fewest points allowed at the break by the Musketeers this season. The fewest allowed this season was 16 against UNCW on December 18.
Briana Glover had a career-high 20 points.
Shatyra Hawkes tied a career-high with eight rebounds.
