KINGSTON, R.I. – No. 18/17 University of Dayton defeated Rhode Island 74-48 Sunday at the Ryan Center. The Flyers (15-1 overall, 3-0 Atlantic 10) improved to 3-0 in A-10 play for the first time in program history.
Senior Sam MacKay led the Flyers with 16 points, five assists and five steals. The UD point guard, who leads the A-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio, had just one turnover. Sophomores Andrea Hoover and Ally Malott also reached double figure scoring with 11 points each. Freshman Kelley Austria tied her career-high with a game-high six assists. Freshman Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova had three blocked shots.
The Flyers sank nine three-pointers and shot 52.9 percent from beyond the arc (9-of-17), tying their second best performance of the season. Dayton also shot 48.3 percent from the field (28-of-58).
UD won the battle of the boards 31-28 after trailing in that category at the half. The Flyers forced 25 turnovers, their second-highest tally this season and capitalized with 33 points off turnovers.
Dayton returns home for back-to-back conference games at UD Arena: Thursday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. against George Washington for its annual School Day Game, and Sunday, Jan. 27 vs. UMass at 2 p.m.
