CINCINNATI – The Xavier Musketeers slip to the Ohio University Bobcats 68-62 Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center. Senior Jessica Pachko earned her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Musketeers conclude their non-conference schedule with a 6-8 record. Ohio improves to 5-7 for the season. Ohio has defeated Xavier five consecutive times dating back to 1990 and hold a 5-1 all-time record over the Musketeers.
With 15:18 left in the second half the Musketeers had their first lead of the game, leading 33-32 after a layup by Pachko. Xavier began the second half with a 14-3 run for a span of 3:35.
The Bobcats regained the lead shortly after, but were never to pull away from the Musketeers. XU were in a 54-51 hole with 4:51 left in the second half. A three pointer in the left corner by Ashley Wanninger cut the Bobcat lead to three with only minutes remaining. Wanninger finished with five points, four rebounds and a steal.
Late game free throws sealed the deal for the Bobcats. Ohio outshot Xavier 43.3 percent to 35.5 percent for the game. XU was able to grab more rebounds than Ohio, holding a 41-37 edge for the contest. The Musketeers only turned the ball over eight times
At half Ohio led Xavier 27-19. Pachko had a team-high six points and five rebounds at the break.
The Bobcats jumped out to an 8-0 lead to begin the game after making their first three shots, including two deep balls. The Musketeers regrouped and was able to cut the lead to 14-12 with 6:43 left in the first half. XU went on an 8-0 run while forcing 12 consecutive missed shots by the Bobcats.
Sophomore Lakeisha Crouch was not with the team tonight. “Lakeisha was unable to participate in tonight’s game due to personal reasons,” commented head coach Amy Waugh. “Although there is no definitive time frame for her, we look forward to her return to the team.”
Kiyanna Black had a game-high 23 points from 9-of-18 shooting from the field.
Xavier will begin Atlantic 10 competition next Sunday, January 13 at Cintas Center against Duquesne. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m
