Women’s Basketball Defeats Quinnipiac 75-60 to Advance in the WNIT
Owls led by two double-doubles; Shey Peddy scores her 1,000th point at Temple
PHILADELPHIA – With impressive performances from all five starters, Temple women’s basketball rolled past Quinnipiac (22-10) by a score of 75-60 to advance to the WNIT Second Round. The Owls (22-9) will now play Harvard, 73-71 winners over Hofstra tonight. Temple will once again serve as host, with the game against the Crimson set for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 17 in McGonigle Hall.
Shey Peddy scored 21 points to lead all players, and has now surpassed the 1,000-point mark in just her two-year Temple career. Peddy has scored 1,855 points in her Division I career (including two years at Wright State), and now has 1,001 as an Owl.
Nearly completing a triple-double was Brittany Lewis, who started the game for Temple and finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high nine assists. Also with a double-double was Kristen McCarthy with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Victoria Macaulay scored 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, and grabbed eight boards. Rounding out the starting lineup was BJ Williams who dished six assists and continues to rank among the top 40 players in the nation in assists.
Samantha Guastella led Quinnipiac with 11 points and six rebounds off the bench, while starter Felicia Barron finished with 10 points including three treys.
Quinnipiac hit 3-of-6 behind the arc in the early going to lead 16-13 eight minutes into the game, but then the Owls took over.
Temple used a 14-0 run to take an 11-point, 27-16 lead, and the Bobcats never again came within fewer than seven. Peddy hit 4-of-6 from three-point range in the first half to lead all players with 14 points at halftime, and the fourth gave Temple a 17-point lead near the end of the half. The Owls took a 45-29 lead into the break after a jumper from McCarthy in the final seconds.
The 45 first-half points tied Temple’s highest scoring output in a first half this season as the Owls out-shot Quinnipiac 45.5 percent to 38.5 percent. Temple was strong on the glass as well, out-rebounding the Bobcats 23-14 and finishing the half with a 9-1 edge in second-chance points.
Still leading by 16, 52-36 less than four minutes into the second half, Temple surged ahead with a 9-0 run for a 25-point lead. The Owls’ largest lead of the contest would be 27 with 7:05 remaining, but the Bobcats whittled away and finished the game with just a 15-point deficit as the Owls went scoreless in the final five minutes.
Game Notes:
The WNIT win was the first for Temple since 1983, as the Owls’ last appearance in 2001 resulted in a 59-57 loss at James Madison in the first round…Temple and Harvard have never met before in the history of the program…BJ Williams stands just two assists away from cracking the top five all-time in the program (currently has 357)…With 147 assists this season, Williams is now tied for the fourth spot on the all-time single-season list.
