WASHINGTON – Playing in the final home game of her career, senior Tiana Myers scored a team-high 15 points, but the George Washington women’s basketball team fell to Atlantic 10 Conference rival La Salle, 69-47, on Wednesday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center.
The Colonials (11-16, 4-9 A-10) jumped out to an 8-2 lead after 3:45 of play, as they made four of their first eight shots and forced six Explorer turnovers.
But La Salle (13-15, 7-6 A-10) caught fire following the first media timeout, connecting on seven of its next 12 shots and holding GW without a field goal for more than eight minutes during a 16-0 run that gave the visitors an 18-8 lead before a three-pointer by Myers at the 7:54 mark ended the Colonials’ drought. The Explorers led 34-23 at halftime.
The teams traded field goals in the opening minutes of the second stanza before a 9-2 GW run pulled the Colonials within eight, 42-34, with 12:39 remaining, but they would get no closer, as La Salle scored 18 of the game’s next 22 points to take a game-high 22-point lead at 60-38 with 4:28 left.
Myers’ 15 points came on 7-of-12 shooting, while senior Tara Booker recorded 12 points and a team-best seven rebounds. La Salle guard Brittany Wilson led the Explorers with 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Prior to the game, the Colonials honored Myers and classmate Kristin Aldridge in a Senior Night ceremony.
Despite the loss, GW was assured a spot in the 12-team Atlantic 10 Championship when Fordham (2-11) lost to St. Bonaventure Wednesday evening. The Colonials will learn their seeding and first-round opponent following Sunday’s season finale at Saint Joseph’s.
