WASHINGTON, D.C. — Richmond won its eight-straight and completed its fourth sweep of GW, 63-51, Saturday afternoon in D.C.
Richmond improves to 19-5, 7-3, while the Colonials fall 11-13, 4-6.
The Spiders were unstoppable at the start, going 10-for-10 to begin the game. Richmond pushed its lead to the largest of the first frame at 20-6 after a Genevieve Okoro layup.
GW sprang to life with a 6-0 run afterwards, but Richmond’s damage had been done. Kerri Soppe sunk a three as time expired to have Richmond go into the break with a 39-26 advantage.
The Spiders went up by 59-39, but GW countered with an 11-0 run to get to within 59-47 with 6:21 remaining.
Richmond would keep the advantage at arms length to secure the win.
In an outside the lines moment, Richmond’s two-sport wonder Becca Wann and GW’s multitalented athlete Jamie Armstrong squared off against each other in today’s game. Wann, the success story of the year in women’s soccer, and an ample contributor in basketball, was blocked by Armstrong in the second half.
The affable Wann congratulated Armstrong on the play and they both discussed their respective sports (women’s soccer and basketball for Wann, volleyball and basketball for Armstrong).
Wann finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Armstrong, playing in her first collegiate game, scored two points, grabbed three boards and had a team-high three blocks.
Richmond dished 21 assists (one shy of tying its season-high) and outrebounded GW, 39-25. Richmond shot 7-for-13 from long range (53.8%) and 26-of-57 (45.6%) for the game.
Four Spiders scored in double-figures, led by Rachael Bilney’s 15 points. Bilney, who previously torched the Colonials with 32 points in the previous meeting, hit 3-of-6 from long range, grabbed six rebounds and had four assists. Wann followed with 12, Abby Oliver with 11 and Genevieve Okoro tallied 10 off the bench.
The Spiders play their final non conference game of the season at Longwood Monday. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.
