WASHINGTON – Senior Tiana Myers equaled her career-high with 24 points, tallying 20 in the first half alone, to lead the George Washington women’s basketball team to a 68-58 win over Atlantic 10 Conference rival Saint Louis on Wednesday at Smith Center.
The Colonials (10-10, 3-3 A-10) trailed, 29-19, with 6:37 to play in the first half before junior Danni Jackson sparked a 20-5 run to end the period with back-to-back field goals. After a three-pointer by Billiken guard Courtney Webb, GW scored 12 straight points, taking the lead for good on a jumper by Megan Nipe at the 2:55 mark, and Myers capped the spurt with a layup at the buzzer off a nice feed from freshman Chakecia Miller.
Myers made her first six shots from the floor and finished 8-for-10 in the period, and she tallied 10 of her 20 first-half points in the final 4:28 of action to ignite the Colonials’ decisive run.
After GW scored the first two baskets of the second half, Saint Louis rallied for seven straight points to climb back within four, 44-40, with 15:37 remaining, but an 11-4 Colonial run gave the hosts their biggest lead of the game, 55-44, at the 9:31 mark.
The Billikens (7-13, 1-4 A-10) would not go quietly, again making it a four-point contest three minutes later, but they could get no closer.
Myers’ 24 points came on 10-of-17 shooting, as she also matched her career-best for field goals in a game. Jackson and senior Tara Booker both made 6-of-10 shots for 15 points apiece. Jackson added four assists, while Booker tallied a game-high nine rebounds and a career-high five blocks. In addition, Miller stuffed the stat sheet with six points, five assists and four steals.
Webb led Saint Louis with 14 points off the bench, as she drained all four of her three-point attempts. Forward Mallory Eggert and guard Desirae Ball added 12 points apiece for the Billikens, while guard Janisha Gearlds tallied seven assists and eight rebounds.
After shooting 53.1 percent in the first half, the Colonials finished at 47.3 percent for the game while holding Saint Louis to 38.6 percent from the floor. GW also scored 26 points off 23 Billiken miscues, but SLU outrebounded the Colonials, 39-28.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday, when they host A-10 rival Dayton at 2 p.m.
