PITTSBURGH – Despite keeping it close early into the second half, the Xavier women’s basketball team faltered at Duquesne Wednesday night, 68-49. Xavier was led by junior Jessica Pachko with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season.
All seven Musketeers that saw game action scored for XU, including senior Tyeasha Moss with nine points and seven rebounds. Senior Sabrina Johnson chipped in eight points for XU.
Duquesne improves to 13-4 on the season and 1-1 in Atlantic 10 play while Xavier slips to 3-12 overall and 0-2 in league action.
Despite shooting 45.0 percent for the game, the Musketeers could not overcome 27 turnovers. Xavier narrowly claimed the battle of the boards, 36-35.
Trailing by five at the half, 33-28, the Musketeers opened the second frame with an 8-0 run to retake the lead, 36-33. Xavier lead by as many as four, 40-36, with 12:47 remaining in the contest before Duquesne used a 19-1 run to put the game away. The Musketeers were able to cut it to 10 but would get no closer as the Dukes pulled away.
Duquesne was led by Orsi Szecsi with a game-high 15 points, one of four Dukes in double-figures scoring. Wumi Agunbiade added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Musketeers return to action this weekend with a trip to Philadelphia on Saturday to take on La Salle. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at La Salle’s Tom Gola Arena on Jan. 14.
