Iona remains unbeaten in MAAC; tops Marist 100-76

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Iona College men’s basketball scored early and often and held of a second half surge by its opponent in a 100-76 win over Marist at McCann Arena. Senior Mike Glover posted a game-high 31 points to help the Gaels (13-3, 5-0 MAAC) remain unbeaten in MAAC play through five contests for the first time since the 1996-97 season.

Glover shot 11-of-19 from the field and 9-for-11 from the line, recorded seven rebounds and matched a season-high with four blocks in the win. Juniors Lamont Jones and Kyle Smyth poured in 17 points apiece. Jones recorded a career-best eight rebounds and had two steals while shooting 7-for-9 from the field. Thirteen of the 17 points came in the second half. On the contrary, Smyth netted all 17 of his points in the first half, connecting on five three-point daggers in frame. Senior Scott Machado had 16 points, nine assists and six rebounds. Junior Taaj Ridley posted eight points.

Iona quickly jumped out to a 9-2 advantage less than three minutes into the contest on a Glover layup at 17:26. The lead ballooned to double figures for the first time as Jones connected on a mid-range jumper with just under 12 minutes to play. Less than four minutes later, a Smyth three-ball put Iona ahead 35-14 with 7:59 on the clock. Another Smyth three-pointer gave the Gaels their largest lead of the contest, 49-22 at the five minute mark. The Maroon & Gold held a 24-point, 56-32 advantage at the break.

Marist came out of halftime and blitzed the Gaels for eight straight points to cut the deficit to 16 points at 17:22. Less than a minute later, a three-pointer by Devin Price got the Red Foxes within 12 at 57-45 with 16:36 to play. Marist would get no closer, however. After rookie Chavaughn Lewis hit a trifecta at 3:46 to make the score 89-73, the Gaels scored 11 of the final 14 points of the ball game to stretch the advantage to 24 points.

Marist sophomore Adam Kemp posted big numbers with 25 points and 15 rebounds, scoring 17 points in the second half as the home team attempted to draw closer to the Gaels. Price chipped in 23 points, shooting 9-for-20 from the field. Lewis scored six of his 13 points in the final four minutes of the game.

The Maroon & Gold shot 61.0% from the field including 65.5% in the first half. They limited the Red Foxes to 38.5% shooting and 27.6% in the first 20 minutes. Marist out rebounded Iona 38-33, but the Gaels held a 18-11 advantage in assists and 19-13 lead in the turnover statistic.

The Gaels are home for a season-long stretch of three games at the Hynes Center starting Thursday night (Jan. 12) vs. MAAC and Metro Area rival Manhattan at 7:00 pm. Iona then hosts Loyola (Jan. 15) and Rider (Jan. 20), two teams picked in the top four of the MAAC during the preseason.
