AMHERST, Mass. – Despite out-scoring the Crimson in the second half, 32-29, the UMass women’s basketball team could not overcome a slow offensive start, falling to Harvard, 68-47 at the Mullins Center on Tuesday evening. With the loss, the Minutewomen wrap up their non-conference slate at 5-10 on the year, while the Crimson levels its record at 6-6.
Juniors Shakia Robinson (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and Jasmine Watson (South Bend, Ind./South Bend Washington) combined for 32 of UMass’ 47 points on the night with 17 and 15 respectively. Twelve of Robinson’s points came after the intermission, while she added five rebounds and four steals, as well. Watson totaled 15 points and was just shy of a double-double after grabbing a game-best nine boards. Redshirt sophomore Carolann Cloutier (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College/Old Dominion) posted a career high in assists for the second time in the last three games, totaling nine helpers.
Senior Emilie Teuscher (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) scored the first points of the game at the 16:59 mark, but the Crimson proceeded to hit their next four straight from beyond the arc to lead 12-4. Harvard went up by as many as 24 in the period and led 39-15 at the intermission, aided by 51.7% shooting, including a 6-for-10 clip from three. The Minutewomen were just 7-for-27 (25.9%) in the frame, while going 0-for-5 from three-point range.
UMass improved upon its first half offense coming out of the break, but could not bring the deficit under 20 in the remainder of the contest. The Minutewomen finished the evening 17-for-64 (26.6%) overall, 2-for-21 (9.5%) from three and 11-of-21 (52.4%) at the free throw line. The Crimson shot 47.4% (27-for-57) overall, 45.0% (9-for-20) from beyond the arc and made 83.3% (5-for-6) of its free throws.
Christine Clark paced three Harvard scorers in double figures with 13 points, while Brogan Berry followed with a double-double on 12 points and 10 assists. Emma Golen contributed 10 points and six boards, while Victoria Lippert had nine points.
UMass will open its Atlantic 10 schedule this Saturday, Jan. 7, when the squad plays host to Saint Joseph’s at 2 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
