NEW YORK, NY – Iona College men’s basketball sophomore Sean Armand lit up Madison Square Garden with a career-high 32 points and a single-game school and MAAC record 10 three-point field goals in the Gaels’ 95-59 victory over Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Armand shot 11-for-22 from the field and 10-for-19 from beyond the arc off the bench leading four Maroon & Gold scorers in double-digits.
Armand’s 10 treys broke teammate Kyle Smyth’s single-game Iona record of eight at Albany last year. He recorded one more than the previous record in a conference game shared by five different performers. Senior guard Jermel Jenkins poured in 16 points off the bench, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and 3-of-6 from downtown while adding three assists. Junior guard Lamont Jones posted 14 points with seven assists and two steals and senior forward Mike Glover added 10 points in the win. Senior guard Scott Machado flirted with his second triple-double in three games, posting nine points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Gaels.
Iona out shot Siena 44.7% to 36.5% and held a 48-40 advantage on the boards. The Gaels connected on a season-best 17 three-pointers, one shy of a school record set last season at Albany. The squad’s 27 assists was one shy of its season best 28. Iona improved its NCAA-leading assist per game average to 20.5 per game. The team’s 85.8 points per game average remains No. 5 in the nation.
Trailing 19-17 early in the first half, the Gaels scored 10 straight points to open a 27-19 lead and never looked back. Armand began his barrage at the 6:04 mark of the frame. With Iona leading 37-25, the sophomore scored the team’s final 20 points of the half, outscoring Siena 20-6 by himself. The Maroon & Gold held a 26-point, 57-31 halftime advantage.
Armand continued his torrid shooting in the second half, scoring nine of the squad’s first 13 points. His three ball with 13:24 mark put Iona ahead 70-39, it was his ninth of the contest, breaking both Smyth’s Iona and the conference records. He drained his final dagger for good measure with 10:30 remaining to give the Gaels a 35-point advantage. Iona’s largest lead of the contest was 41 points after Machado hit two free throws with 4:35 remaining to get the team over 90 points. Junior Ra’Shad James’ scored four points after that point to round out the Maroon & Gold’s scoring.
Siena was led by freshman phenom Evan Hymes’ 22 points and five assists. Junior OD Anosike posted a double-double with 12 poitns and 13 boards and senior Brandon Walters added 10 boards and four blocks in the loss.
With the win the Gaels complete a program-record nine-game trip away from home with a very respectable 7-2 mark. Iona returns to the Hynes Center for the first time in 39 days on Friday night when they host Niagara in a 9:00 pm tip-off on ESPNU.
