WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Xavier women’s basketball team dropped a 59-52 decision at UNCW Thursday night at the Seahawks’ Trask Coliseum. Senior Tyeasha Moss led the Musketeers with 17 points while freshman Lakeisha Crouch grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in her first collegiate appearance.
With the loss, the Musketeers fall to 3-9 on the season while the Seahawks improve to 6-5 overall.
Also for Xavier, sophomore Lynette Holmes posted 10 points, including going 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Moss was a near perfect 11-of-12 from the line as the Musketeers shot a blistering 83.3 perfect from the stripe for the game.
XU out-rebounded UNCW 41-33. The Seahawks shot 35.2 percent from the floor while the Musketeers were 30.2 percent.
Xavier tied the game at 37-all with 13:49 remaining in the game but UNCW used an 8-2 to break open the game and led by as many as 10 late in the contest. The Musketeers were able to pull within four, 54-50, with 41 seconds showing on the clock but the Seahawks held on for the seven-point victory.
The Musketeers suffered through shooting woes in the first half, making only five of 21 shots from the floor but were able to hang in the game with a perfect 16-of-16 showing at the free throw line. Moss led XU with eight points in the first frame, all from the line, while Gray had a team-best five boards.
The Seahawks were led by Alisha Andrews with 17 points and Karneshia Garrett with eight rebounds.
Xavier returns to action after the New Year with a January 4 match up against Eastern Illinois at home. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center. It’s Dollar Night and tickets, hot dogs and popcorn with be available for $1.
