LAS VEGAS – The Xavier women’s basketball team dropped its final game of the 2011 Duel in the Desert 73-51 to Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Lynette Holmes led the Musketeers with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Xavier falls to 3-8 on the year while Oklahoma improves to 7-3 overall.
Also for the Musketeers, senior Sabrina Johnson had a career-high 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Senior Tyeasha Moss chipped in nine points to go with six assists, five rebounds and two steals. Also with nine points for Xavier was junior Amber Gray.
For the game, XU shot 30.6 percent from the floor and 61.5 percent from the line. The Musketeers have now gone 202 consecutive games with a made 3-point basket after sinking five on the day. Oklahoma was 44.8 percent from the floor and 77.8 percent from the line. The Musketeers won the battle of the boards, 47-36, and 20 of XU’s boards were on the offensive glass.
Oklahoma shot a blistering 52.9 percent in the first half to Xavier’s 26.7 percent. After scoring only 11 points in the first 15 minutes of the game, the Musketeers’ offense got going late in the half as XU scored 13 in the final four minutes. Holmes led Xavier with six points and six rebounds in the first frame.
The Sooners were led by Whitney Hand with a game-high 19 points and Joanna McFarland with seven rebounds.
After the holiday break, the Musketeers will be back in action at UNC Wilmington on Dec. 29. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. in Wilmington, N.C.
