Columbus, OH – Charlotte had three players in double-figures led by a career-high 14 points from Hillary Sigmon but it was not enough as the 49ers dropped an 88-58 decision at #12 Ohio State.
“I was proud of Hillary’s effort today, she played hard today,” Charlotte coach Cara Consuegra said. “You have to congratulate Ohio State they have a very good team. However, I was disappointed in our effort. We did not start the game well today. We are a better team than we showed today. We need to play with more effort. We have to regroup quickly and get ready for a tough North Carolina A&T team at home on Wednesday.”
Sigmon led the 49ers with 14 points off the bench. She connected on two threes in the game. Gabby Tyler recorded her second straight double-figure scoring game with 13 points. Jennifer Hailey nearly recorded a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Amanda Dowe grabbed seven rebounds. Tyler grabbed six rebounds in the game for the 49ers. Every 49er that played in the game either scored or grabbed a rebound.
Ohio State began the game by scoring the first four points. Hailey cut Ohio State’s lead in half with the 49ers’ first basket at the 17:59 mark. Charlotte cut the Ohio State lead to 6-4 behind a basket by Tyler at the 17:12 mark.
Then, Ohio State went on a 19-6 run over the next six minutes taking control of the game with a 25-10 lead at the 11:44 mark. Ohio State pushed their first half lead to 30 points, 44-14, with 4:46 on the clock. Then, Sigmon scored seven of Charlotte’s next nine points as the 49ers went on a 9-0 run cutting Ohio State’s lead to 44-23 with 1:25 left in the first half. Ohio State scored two of the first half’s final three points taking a 46-24 lead at the half.
In the second half, the 49ers were never able to get the score any closer as Ohio State outscored the 49ers 21-16 over the first nine minutes of the half. Behind a basket by Amanda Dowe and two free throws by Sigmon the 49ers scored the final four points of the game cutting Ohio State’s final margin of victory to 88-58.
The 49ers return to action when they play North Carolina A&T in Halton Arena, Wednesday, December 21 at 7 pm.
