ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – For the fifth time in its history, the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team is Receiving Votes in the national rankings, as on Monday the Bonnies garnered one vote in the Associated Press Poll.
Bonaventure is off to a 10-1 start following a 67-56 win Sunday afternoon against perennial mid-major power Marist. The Bonnies have already defeated a program-best three BCS schools (St. John’s, West Virginia, Indiana), and will get a shot at a fourth Dec. 29 against Villanova.
Over the course of their current six-game winning streak, the Bonnies are holding their opponents to just 46.6 points per game, defeating those six teams by an average margin of 16.7 points.
St. Bonaventure has previously Received Votes during the 2008-09 season on Dec. 8, 2008, and for three consecutive weeks in the 2009-10 season from Dec. 8-22. The most votes it has ever received was 13 on Dec. 15, 2009, in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll after starting the season 10-0. That club went on to win its first 11 games of the year.
Bonaventure’s lone loss this year was to Delaware, 61-49, which is ranked No. 19/23 in the nation. The Bonnies played that game without their starting point guard, Armelia Horton, who at that juncture was averaging just under 10 points per game.
The ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll will be released on Tuesday afternoon.
The 10-1 record for the Brown and White is the second-best start to a season in program history, bested only by the 11-0 start to the 2009-10 campaign. The Bonnies will look to extend that mark to 11-1 on Thursday when it travels to Hamilton, N.Y. to face the Colgate Raiders at 2 p.m.
