PITTSBURGH – Jocelyn Floyd scored a career-high 19 points and Wumi Agunbiade also recorded 19 as the Duquesne women’s basketball won its fifth straight game on Sunday afternoon, 86-53 over Morehead State.
The Dukes improve to 7-1 on the season and the Eagles fall to 2-8.
Carly Vendemia added a career-high 13 points on a personal-best 6-for-9 shooting. Orsi Szecsi and Alex Gensler tied their career-marks with nine and eight rebounds respectively. Ahjah Hall’s eight boards was her career-high.
Agunbiade scored nine points in the game’s first five minutes as Duquesne jumped out to a 15-0 lead to begin the contest. The Dukes’ defense held the Eagles scoreless until the 14:46 mark of the first half when Linda Nixon converted a foul shot.
MSU, who missed its first nine shots from the floor, did not record a field goal until Allie Turner’s jumper at 12:47. Duquesne would score the next 12 points to build a 29-4 lead midway through the half. The 25-point lead was the largest of the half.
The Dukes defense, which held the Eagles to just 18.2 percent shooting in the first half and 0-for-8 from beyond-the-arc, would only allow five more field goals the rest of the half, as they would take a 42-19 lead into halftime.
A Floyd steal and coast-to-coast layup at the 17:46 mark of the second half gave Duquesne a 30-point advantage at 51-21. Vendemia’s foul shot three minutes later capped a 16-3 run that gave DU a 58-22 lead with 14:28 to play.
The Duquesne lead got as high as 37 points on Gensler’s jumper with 5:54 left. Morehead State would only get the score under 30 two times the rest of the way, the last with 1:59 to go on a Mackenzie Arledge layup.
Hall finished the second half scoring as she did the first half, with a foul shot, to close out the game with an 86-53 win.
This is the first of three games in six days for the Dukes. Wednesday night they host Akron (5-4) before closing out the homestand against West Virginia (7-2) on Saturday afternoon.
