AMHERST, Mass. – Emilie Teuscher, Jasmine Watson and Shakia Robinson shot a combined 15-for-29 for the UMass women’s basketball team, but the rest of the squad was limited to 2-for-21 in a 66-45 loss to Providence at the Mullins Center on Friday night. The Minutewomen are now 1-8 on the year, while the Friars level their record at 5-5.
Robinson led UMass in scoring and rebounding for the second time in the past three games with 15 and eight, respectively. Teuscher posted her second straight game in double figures with 12 points and dished five assists, while Watson scored in double figures for an eighth straight game with 11 points while grabbing three rebounds.
Providence jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the start and though UMass would respond with the next five points to tie the score, the Minutewomen could not pull in front of the Friars at any point. With UMass hitting a five minute, 35 second dry spell midway through the period, Providence managed to go up by 20 for the first time at the 6:36 mark in the opening half, 27-9, and held a 38-17 advantage at the intermission.
UMass could draw no closer than 19 in the second half and finished the night shooting 34.0% (17-for-50) overall, 25.0% from three (4-for-16) and 77.8% (7-of-9) at the charity stripe. The Friars ended the evening 23-for-65 (35.4%) from the field, 7-for-18 (38.9%) from beyond the arc and made 13-of-20 (65.0%) free throws. Providence finished the night with a 43-34 edge in rebounds, as well.
Teya Wright led the Friars with her ninth double-double of the season, totaling 17 points and 11 boards. Rachel Barnes followed with 13 points and four rebounds.
