ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior Tiana Myers scored a team-high 15 points to lead the George Washington women’s basketball team to a 80-44 victory over Houston Baptist in the final game of the Navy Classic on Saturday evening at Alumni Hall.
Senior Tara Booker was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 9.5 points and 2.5 rebounds. She shot 53 percent (7-of-13) from the field including five three-pointers in the Colonials’ two victories over Maine and Houston Baptist.
GW (5-3) shot an even 50 percent (31-of-62) from the floor, including 8-of-16 from three point range, on Saturday to clinch its fourth straight victory. Entering the game, GW had not won four in a row since the 2008 season.
After hitting 7-of-11 attempts from three-point range in Friday’s victory the Colonials continued their torrid pace from downtown, connecting on 50 percent (8-of-16) of their attempts Saturday. For the tournament, GW shot 55 percent (15-of-27) from beyond the arc which ranks as the third best performance in the history of the Navy Classic.
The Colonials forced 22 turnovers with a season-high 16 steals which resulted in 27 points. GW also finished with a 39-31 advantage in rebounds, including 11 offensive boards which led to 11 second-chance points. Additionally, the Colonials finished with a 16-2 advantage in fast-break points and received a season-high 47 points off the bench.
GW opened the game on a 7-2 run and did not trail the rest of the game. Myers and Booker each hit two of the Colonials’ six first-half three-pointers en route to a 42-23 halftime lead. The Colonials shot 53 percent from the field in the first half.
The Colonials cooled off from long range in the second half but used a strong performance from the bench to maintain the lead, eventually pushing the margin to 38 points with under two minutes left in the second half.
All of GW’s available players found the score sheet led by Myers (15), Booker (10) and freshman Chakecia Miller (10). Miller was 5-of-7 from the field and added a team-high five steals to go with four assists and two rebounds.
Senior Kristin Aldridge was effective at the point for the second night in a row, finishing with six assists against zero turnovers to go with six points. Combined with Friday’s performance, Aldridge totaled 11 assists and zero turnovers in the tournament.
George Washington has the next week off before visiting district-rival, No. 20 Georgetown next Sunday. Tip off from McDonough Arena is scheduled for 2 pm and the game will be broadcast on Verizon FiOS1.
