CINCINNATI– Xavier knocked down Cincinnati in the Skyline Chili Women’s Crosstown Shootout 69-60 at Cintas Center Sunday. Sophomore guard Shatyra Hawkes had a career-high 19 points and dished out a game-high five assists.
The Musketeers improve their record to 2-4 for the season and win their third consecutive Kendle Cup match-up against the Bearcats. Cincinnati suffered its first loss of the season and drop to 6-1.
Hawkes converted 11-of-12 free throws, including six in the closing minute to seal the victory for the Musketeers. Xavier had four players in double figures scoring: Tyeasha Moss with 19, Jessica Pachko with 13, Lynette Holmes with 10, and Hawkes. Pachko added a career-high 12 rebounds to her point total to complete the double-double.
As a team XU was able to get to the line more and shot 21-of-24 from the charity stripe. Xavier was more productive offensively in the second half, connecting on 60 percent of its shots and a game total 45.8 percent from the field. The Musketeers out-rebounded UC 39-26, of which 13 were offensive boards which led to nine second-chance points.
With a string of stops and buckets by Pachko and Holmes, Xavier was able to tie up the score at 47 with 7:05 to play. XU took its first lead since the 14:19 mark in the first half off two free throws by Moss at 6:30 in the second frame. Holmes hit two crucial free throws with less than two minutes left to give XU the eight-point lead. From that point on, XU won the game on free throws.
Dayeesha Hollins of Cincinnati had a team-high 19 points, 16 of them came in the second half.
The Musketeers stuck with the Bearcats the entire first half as they went into the locker rooms down only five, 27-22. XU was able to force three quick fouls on UC’s leading scorer Bjonee Reaves and limited her to only three minutes of play in the first frame.
Pachko led Xavier scorers and rebounders with nine points and six boards in the first half. XU out-rebounded UC 20-14, including eight offensive rebounds. Both teams struggled from the field as Xavier shot 30 percent (7-of-23) and Cincinnati was held to 33 percent (9-of-27). Dayeesha Hollins led all scorers with 10 points in the first period.
