For the third straight game, the women’s basketball team fell behind early, this time by a 5-0 margin to Manhattan and once again the Rams were able to overcome the setback and defeat the Jaspers, 59-49, in the 43rd annual “Battle of the Bronx” on Wednesday from the Draddy Gymnasium. The Rams ended a two-game losing streak to the Jaspers, as the team collected a win for the first time since 2009. Senior Becky Peters scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Rams to the win.
The game started off with Jaspers scoring five quick points before the Rams countered with four straight points from Peters to make the score 5-4 at 16:41. Eventually the Rams would tie the score at 9-9 on a Christina Gaskin three-pointer at 14:56. From there, the teams would tie the score two more times in the next 90 seconds.
The next five minutes saw the Rams build a seven point lead, 23-16, on buckets from Taryn Durant, and Peters and a three-pointer from Charlotte Stoddart. The Jaspers then regained the lead using a 10-2 run to make the score 26-25 at the 4:10 mark.
The final four minutes saw the Jaspers build a five point lead and go into the halftime break ahead 32-27.
The second half saw the Rams turn up the pressure on defense forcing the Jaspers in 15 second-half turnovers while collecting seven steals. The half began with a Manhattan basket by Morgan Ondya to give the Jaspers a seven point lead, which was their largest of the game.
The Rams used an 8-0 run over the next 4:06 to take a 35-34 lead when Peters hit a three-pointer at 15:38. Less than three minutes later, a pair of Arielle Collins foul shots evened the score for the seventh time, this time at 37-37.
Fordham never looked back from there as they went on a 10-0 over the next 4:38 to build the lead to 47-37 as Peters, Durant and Collins all scored in that run. The largest lead of the game for the Rams, 12 points, came on a Durant layup at 5:45 and Fordham went on to win 59-49.
Peters scored a season-high 18 points in the win. Durant chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds. Collins had 14 points and a team-best five thefts.
The Rams improved to 4-2 with the win and next face San Diego on Saturday, December 3 at 1:00 P.M. at the Rose Hill Gym.
Game Notes: Becky Peters passed Stacey Paukovitz (1,045) for 13th place on the all-time Fordham scoring list…She also passed Kathy Reidy and Denise Hammersley in career starts (84) and trails Mobolaji Akiode by one…The win ends a two-game losing streak in the Battle of the Bronx….Manhattan now leads the all-time series, 24-19…Collins’ five steals ties her career-high set at Xavier last year…Durant shot 60% from the field and played a season-best 27 minutes.
