A-10 Hands Out Women’s Hoops Weekly Awards
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Duquesne’s Wumi Agunbiade and Fordham’s Abigail Corning have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Christina Gaskin of Fordham was also honored as the Conference’s Rookie of the Week.
Agunbiade averaged 21.0 points in a perfect 2-0 week for Duquesne (4-1), including a 74-66 victory at North Dakota State and a decisive 84-53 triumph against Davidson. The Pickering, Ontario native recorded a career-high 32 points on 80 percent (12-15) shooting against the Bison, while adding six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals. She then registered her fourth-straight double-digit outing with 10 points against the Wildcats. The sophomore forward finished the week shooting 62 percent (16-26) from the floor, while averaging 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.
Corning, a sophomore guard, also averaged 21.0 points on 56 percent (14-25) shooting, as Fordham (3-2) went 1-1 at the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Wethersfield, Conn., native scored a career-high 29 points (11-15) in the Rams’ 70-57 victory over event host UCF, before registering a game-best 13 points in Fordham’s narrow 48-47 loss to TCU. Corning concluded the seven-day stretch shooting 55 percent from beyond the arc (6-11) and 100 percent (8-8) at the line, while adding eight rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Gaskin, a freshman forward, helped guide Fordham to a 1-1 week at the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Hockley, England import scored in double-figures in both contests, including the Rams’ first double-double of the season with 10 point and 12 rebounds against the Knights. Gaskin finished the week averaging 10.0 points and 8.0 rebounds a game.
A-10 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HONOR ROLL
Charlotte’s Jennifer Hailey averaged a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds in three games for the 49ers last week … George Washington’s Tara Booker averaged nine points and 7.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Colonials … La Salle’s Alexis Scott averaged 14.3 points in a trio of games for the Explorers last week, including 13 points on 63 percent shooting against cross-town rival Penn … Rhode Island’s Emilie Cloutier averaged 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds for the Rams … Jacy Bradley of Saint Louis recorded team-highs of 18 points and five assists against UT Martin … Temple senior Kristen McCarthy nearly averaged a double-double with 13.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in two losses for the Owls at the Junkanoo Jam Tournament in Freeport, Bahamas … Xavier’s Shatyra Hawkes posted a career-high 15 points in Xavier’s 80-64 loss to No. 3 Stanford on Friday.
