Woodson, Bilney, Nurkic Collect Women’s Hoops Weekly Nods
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Charlotte’s Epiphany Woodson and Richmond’s Rachael Bilney were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. Belma Nurkic of Duquesne was also honored as the Conference’s Rookie of the Week.
Woodson averaged 16.5 points and 4.5 rebounds last week as Charlotte picked up a pair of wins over ACC competitor Virginia Tech and Elon. The Queen City native scored 16 of her game-high 21 points (8-15) in the second half and extra session to lead the 49ers to a 71-65 overtime victory against the Hokies in Blacksburg. She then chipped in 12 points on 55 percent shooting in Charlotte’s 89-58 triumph over the Phoenix at Halton Arena. Woodson, a senior guard, finished the week shooting 54 percent (13-24) from the field and 43 percent (3-7) from beyond the arc, while registering four assists and three steals.
Bilney also averaged 16.5 points in a 2-0 week for Richmond, including wins over Boston University and Old Dominion. The Mill Valley, Calif., native scored a career-best 19 points (7-14), including eight tallies in the span of a minute as the Spiders rallied to beat BU, 72-60. Bilney followed that performance with 14 points (5-12) in a 78-63 win at ODU. For the week, she shot 46 percent (12-26) from the floor, 58 percent (7-12) from beyond the arc and 100 percent (2-2) at the line. The redshirt-junior guard, who currently leads the Richmond roster with her 14.0 points per game average, also contributed five assists, four rebounds, and four steals during the seven-day stretch.
Nurkic, a guard, averaged 15.0 points in a 1-1 week for the Dukes, including a 90-46 rout of Buffalo and a narrow 86-80 loss at North Dakota. The local Pittsburgh product scored a game-high 16 points (7-12) against Buffalo and helped propel a 33-0 run for the Dukes, before chipping in 14 points (5-11) at North Dakota. She finished the week shooting 52 percent (12-23) from the floor, including five three-pointers, while adding six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
