VERMONT HOLDS OFF SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL, 80-67
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Falling behind early, the Saint Joseph’s women’s basketball team fought hard, but it wasn’t enough as the Hawks fell to Vermont, 80-67, in the title game of TD Bank Classic. Junior guard Ashley Prim (Ansonia, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral) and senior forward Kelly Cavallo (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Hawks.
Vermont (4-0) took control of the game early, outscoring the Hawks 19-4 to start the contest. Saint Joseph’s shot just 2-of-13 from the floor and turned the ball over six times over the opening eight minutes as the Catamounts scored eight of their 19 points off turnovers.
Down by as many as 17, the Hawks fought back to make it an eight-point game with under a minute to go. Prim sparked an 11-3 run by the Hawks that saw SJU trim their deficit from 33-16 to 35-27 on a layup by Prim with 43 seconds left in the half.
Vermont would counter with a pair of free throws and a layup at the buzzer by Shanai Heber to make it a 39-27 game as SJU shot just 31 percent (9-of-29) to the Catamounts’ 43.8 percent (14-of-32).
The Catamounts maintained their distance in the second half, allowing SJU to come no closer than eight points, 60-52, on a Prim layup with 5:29 to go. Vermont answered with a 9-1 run to open a 69-53 lead with 3:16 left to seal the win.
For the game, the Hawks shot just 35.3 percent from the floor (24-of-68), while Vermont converted 48 percent of its shots (24-of-50).
Individually, Prim finished with a team-high 17 points to go with three assists, while Cavallo posted a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double.
The Hawks return to action this Tuesday at No. 10/9 Maryland. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
