Women’s Basketball Opens Season with 59-42 Loss to Albany
Becky Peters Reaches 1000 Career Points
The Fordham women’s basketball team opened the 2011-12 campaign with an energetic crowd behind them as they hosted the Albany Great Danes. The crowd was treated to some career moments by Becky Peters and Abigail Corning as Peters eclipsed 1000 career points, with Corning tying a career-high of 14 points. However, the two Fordham standouts could not overcome the Great Danes in 59-42 loss at the Rose Hill Gym.
The game started auspiciously for the Rams as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead on consecutive baskets by Christina Gaskin and Peters and then a three-pointer by Arielle Collins at 16:49. From there, the Great Danes answered with a 16-0 run to lead by nine. The run began with an Adrienne Jones jumper at 12:39 and was stopped by a Corning three-pointer at 6:48. The Rams got as close as three points in the first half when Ranait Griff nailed a three-pointer at 4:43 making the score, 23-20. Albany closed out the half with a 10-4 swing to lead at the break, 33-24.
The first points of the second half came at the 18:45 mark when Peters made a layup off a Collins feed. It was this layup that got her to the milestone. She became the 15th Rams’ player to reach 1000 points and the first since Mobolaji Akiode found the mark in 2003.
The game went back and forth early in the half until the 11:48 mark when a Taryn Durant layup and a foul shot and basket from Corning brought the Rams within four, 42-38, with 7:58 left. Fordham would get no closer though as Albany closed with a 19-4 scoring edge to end the game with a 59-42 victory.
In the game, Albany got the better of the Rams in the paint, 26-12, and got 32 points off of Fordham turnovers.
Corning led the Rams with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. In addition to her seven points, Peters pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds as Fordham outrebounded Albany, 37-32. Ebone Henry scored a game-high 19 for the Great Danes.
The Fordham women’s basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, November 16th, when the Cleveland State Vikings come to the Rose Hill Gymnasium. The game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
