Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer may finally have his wish for a trade granted.
Palmer, who said he would retire if the Bengals did not trade him, is, “on the verge,” of being traded to the Oakland Raiders.
According to sources, the Bengals would acquire two first-round draft picks for Palmer; a first-round pick in 2012 and a conditional first-round pick in 2013. While the trade is not yet completed, it will be, “one of the NFL’s biggest trade-deadline deals in decades.”
Palmer will be stepping in for Oakland quarterback Jason Campbell, who suffered a broken collarbone in Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Campbell was replaced by Kyle Boller after the injury, but the Raiders were not completely satisfied with his performance. And with an inexperienced Terrell Pryor the only quarterback left on the bench, acquiring a veteran quarterback seems to be the best option for Oakland.
Adding Palmer to the Oakland team may make them serious play-off contenders. The Raiders, 4-2, have looked impressive this season and Palmer joining the team could only help them to achieve greater success.
And for the Bengals, trading Palmer is also the best option. Palmer has not played at all this season. In fact, he has not been with the team at all. By trading Palmer, the Bengals are ridding themselves of a liability and opening up cap space because they will no longer have to pay his salary.
All trading must come to a close tonight at midnight, so look for this trade to be completed later today.

2 first round picks? Anyone else think that is steep?
Gino says
It’s a seller’s market? It’s not. It’s just too steep.
Paul says
It’s a win NOW / AT ALL COSTS league. The price is steep, but the cost benefit could be huge.

Palmer is going to be 32, and has had a major injury. But i dont think this is a long term oriented trade. Assuming Palmer is in decent shape, the deal makes sense. However, if the Raiders get a disgruntled and useless Palmer, then this is the type of move that could set them back a year or two. They now essentially have no draft picks next year, so their current roster is going to have to win

I think this is a great trade for both teams. I like the Raiders going for it right now. Palmer is an upgrade over Campbell and I truly think he will be “F You” mode when he gets in there. He is going to want to prove to Mike Brown and everyone in the Bengals organization that he has a lot left in the tank.
The Raiders – thanks to a lot of high draft picks, have some pretty good talent on that team in a weak AFC West division. They can definitely win the division and Palmer might be exactly what they need.
As for the Bengals – Mike Brown actually swallowed his pride and made one of the best trades in his tenure. First he took Andy Dalton and he is proving to be the real deal. Now he gets a least one first round pick and possibly a second first round pick, when they were reportedly holding out for a second. With a young team that doesn’t have the distractions – you can continue to add pieces. This could be a very good Bengals team in the next 2-3 years.

Quick thoughts…
1) The Raiders got better with this trade. I wonder what happens to Campbell now.
2) The Bengals are going to be really good in the next few years. 4 high picks in the next two drafts?
Go Sabres.
Go Bills.

Sabres intermission… now I can type more…
1) I meant (above) that if Palmer plays the way he is capable, the Raiders just got better. I think it will be a true challenge to shake off the “rust” that comes with such a long layoff. In terms of his injury…I think it’s beneficial that he was able to take so much time off.
2) The Bengals, in my opinion, are going to be very good in a few years, so long as they can hit on these 4 high picks. Offensively they have some great weapons in AJ Green, Gresham and Dalton (and Benson pending off-field issues) They are also solid on D. I’ll be the first to admit that I thought the Bengals were going to be terrible this year. It’s just too bad that I’m a secondary Steelers fan and can never like them.
Go Sabres… still.

Palmer essentially has 3 weeks to get up to speed in the Raiders offense. They play Kansas City at home this week. They then have their bye week and then the Broncos in Oakland. I personally think Boller could beat the Chiefs and Broncos using the Raiders running attack and defense. The only negative I can see is the NFL now mandates players receive 5 consecutive days off during their bye week which has had negative consequences thus far on the teams that have had byes.
Casey says
Agree with Chris – I like the Bengals in the coming years. Andy Dalton ahs quickly established himself as a more than capable QB, and their defense – #1 in the league – right?
