Let the comparisons to Ryan Leaf start flowing in. Maybin was a hot prospect when the Bills selected him with the 11th overall selection in the 2009 draft, but has been a major disappointment. The Nittany Lion linebacker was expected to be the next great thing from a school that likes to consider itself “linebacker U”. Under the old CBA agreement, where potential was rewarded with dollars, Maybin signed a 5 year deal worth $17.6 million. The Bills will be responsible to pay off the contract, which means that Maybin will be paid $692,308 per tackle by Buffalo.
He will be linked with Jarmarcus Russell as players who received outrageous deals, forcing the 2011 lockout that caused so much drama. At 23, it is possible that all Maybin needs is a change in scenery, but with Buffalo management allegedly having attitude problems with the disgruntled and oft-injured LB, a new start seems unlikely in the near future. He possesses raw talent, but in the NFL, so does everybody else. It is that drive, the state of mind that no one can stop you, that separates the busts from the gems.
What do you think? Aaron Maybin is a … bum who will never make it? A stud in a losing situation? If he moves to a winner, will he be productive? Or a productive player who will never live up to the expectations that come with being the 11th overall pick but is better than what we’ve have seen in upstate NY for the last few years?

Aaron Maybin is set financially for a little while, but he should at minimum slightly embarrassed spending the money he got from the Buffalo Bills.
Based on that exchange rate – at $692,308 per tackle. If I got that for every 5500 I prepared for 401(k) plans – my company would owe me $91,384,656 ($602,308 x 132). I am going to my boss tomorrow because I am seriously underpaid.
That new Titleist 910D2 driver is paid for!! 🙂

In all seriousness..
Isn’t this another example of the problems with the Buffalo Bills?
Let’s look at a couple of the guys the Bills passed over to pick him – Brian Orakpo, Josh Freeman ( no more QB issues), Brian Cushing and Clay Mathews are examples..
I am not even a Bills fan and that makes me sick..

its no wonder why the bad franchises stay at the bottom and the top teams stay where they are. Remember any Patriot busts that messed up the teams finances for years to come? Any Steeler big time busts? Management runs the NFL, and the teams with good management saty out of their own way by avoiding things like this with in depth scouting and stuff. Its not an accident that these situations come to teams who continually fail

The management of the Bills hasn’t been right for a long time. I remember discussing with my neighbor how the Bills could have grabbed Michael Vick for a song, paired him with TO, and it would have done wonders.
Ah well.

Absolutely no argument from me that the Bills are mismanaged, and of course I also agree that ownership and management play a HUGE role in teams enjoying sustained success …. or not. (also see Oakland Raiders)
Now, is it just me, or do the Cleveland Browns look like a team that’s gonna take a very positive step this year?
Houston Texans looked decent last night although they were without arguably the best WR in the league, Andre Johnson, and arguably the best RB, Arian Foster. If Wade Philips can get the revamped defense with a rebuilt secondary to be just average, it should be (finally) a playoff year for the Texans.
Kyle Soppe says
maybe playoffs for the texans, although its still Peyton’s division until otherwise noted. If there is an upstart team to like, its it he Lions. Nice young core on that D line, with a few nice pieces on offense. Tough division, but don’t sleep on them
Wally says
I think I read that the Jets picked up Maybin.
Kyle Soppe says
The Jets are indeed looking to make that offical. It would fit the Bills to have Maybin reach his potential with a different team within the division
