The Outside World is a weekly recap of the best basketball writing and analysis the internet has to offer.
– Winning a championship is undoubtedly a difficult task. There are many great teams whose legacies may unfairly be seen through the negative light of having failed at that goal. As Vijay Shravah reminds us, sometimes just being consistently good is a challenge in itself.
– Carmelo Anthony thinks the defensive problems in New York are because of the schemes the coaching staff put in place. Really, effort isn’t the main problem? Or ability? Or starting Jared Jeffries at center? In addition, an NBA advance scout thinks the Knicks are fundamentally inadequate at the defensive end and it will likely prevent them from ever winning a championship.
– SLC Dunk put together an “Idiot’s Guide to Potential Lottery Picks in the NCAA Tournament.”
– Dwayne Wade breaks out the most impressive dunk of the season. His post-dunk celebration was not nearly as impressive.
– An NBA coach’s job is on the line because he has struggled to get along with the team’s star point guard. This story is no surprise, but how many guesses would it have taken you to guess it was about Keith Smart and Stephen Curry?
– How many times have you thought, “If I could just be a little more like Donald Sterling I wouldn’t be in this mess!”?
– Zach Lowe took a look at some of the NBA Playoff X-Factors.
– JaVale McGee worked really, really hard for this triple-double. Next step: Working really, really hard to win basketball games.
– One of the hugest stories of the week was the defamation lawsuit filed by referee Bill Spooner against AP reporter Jon Kraczynski for this tweet:
“Ref Bill Spooner told Rambis he’d ‘get it back’ after a bad call. Then he made an even worse call on Rockets. That’s NBA officiating folks.”
I have no idea where this ends up. But both sides have made a pretty serious allegation.
– At Deadspin, they finally put the statistics together to prove Jimmy Chitwood may have been the best offensive fictional basketball player ever.
